Reconcilement

“Any luck? ” His brother grinned at him.

“She told me her real name — Clare, and I asked her to dinner when she came back from Australia. In fact, she invited me to drink coffee in the airport…” Nicholas said, taking a glass of wine from the desk.

“Then why don’t you go? You seem so obsessed with her. Maybe I will have a sister-in-law soon. Hope she would like me as Elizabeth did.” Conard’s smile grew, his eyes glittering with slyness.

“No! What the… We are barely friends now! I’m not going to marry her!” Nicholas doesn’t know why he hurried to explain this.

“Fine, relax, no big deal.” Conard gave a gentle pat on his brother’s shoulder. “You can still have some coffee with her, right? You’ve…been alone for years. You need some company.” He seemed to try to avoid the word ‘divorce’.

“I have your company.” Nicholas said without any thought. Conard’s eyes grew wide-open, a mixture of delight and confusion appears on his face. Suddenly feeling embarrassed, Nicholas continued, “Look, this is the birthday party you arranged specially for me, I’m really thankful for what you’ve done. I don’t want to waste it. Enjoying the party with you is on the top of my list tonight.”

“I see, bro. I’m glad we are reconciled, finally.” Conard stepped forward and again gave Nicholas a big hug. Nicholas almost spill his wine for this action, his heart beats violently and he doesn’t know why.

“Wanna come to my house?” Nicholas offered at the end of the party. The conversation with Conard was more than pleasant. They haven’t seen each other for a long time and both of them seemed to still have much to say.

“Why not? We didn’t have a real talk like this since… Oh, I even can’t remember when.” Conard followed to Nicholas’ car with unsteady pace and got in.

The note of public auction on the gate of Nicholas’ big house disappeared. When they went into the room, Nicholas was surprised to find it clean and nice as nothing has happened. The security alarm was fixed, those weird graffiti was covered by white paint, the glass he previously broke was replaced by a new one, all the furniture was set at their original place. “It’s amazing! How did they manage to do this? I feel like having a lucid dream!”

“They are professional.” Conard didn’t hide the satisfaction in his voice. He staggered to the couch and throw himself on it. “Do you have Tequila?”

“You drank too much. It’s bad for your health. I won’t give you any alcohol. Have some water.” Nicholas held out a glass of soda. Conard didn’t move but stared at his brother with a thoughtful expression. “You do treat me like a child.” He muttered and took the glass.

“No, I didn’t mean that! I’m sorry, Conny…I…” Nicholas remembered the quarrel earlier with his little brother and became uneasy. “I don’t want to control you! Never! It’s just… You may have a headache in the morning and…Oh, Jesus, you are my only brother and I really care about you, that’s all!” Nicholas sat beside Conard and reached for his hand as if Conard would run away at any time. “We are a family and I don’t want any misunderstanding between us any more.” Nicholas softened his voice and looked into Conard’s eyes sincerely.

There was silence cast between them for a while. Finally Conard said in a low voice, “I am the one to be sorry…”

“What?” Nicholas was worried about his brother’s strange reaction.

“I shouldn’t say that no one ask you to play Dad. I shouldn’t say that you are a control freak. I know you didn’t have a choice. But it’s part of the game, I have to…Oh, I shall never say things like that to you. All the things happened before are not your fault. I regretted the moment I said it… Forgive me, please.” Conard bit his lower lip, there seems to be some tears in his eyes.

“It’s OK. It’s fine.” Nicholas dragged him into a embrace. “You know after our Dad was gone, there are so many greedy relatives who was staring at our wealth. I have to grow up to protect all we had. I lost half of my childhood but I don’t want you to go through the same thing. I didn’t want you to experience any hardship. All I cared is making more and more money to support us. So I was too strict with you and had too little communication with you. Until now do I know brotherhood is more important than the number in bank accounts.” He paused for a second and combed Conard’s hair with his fingers. “How I wish I hadn’t sent you to the…doctor. I should communicate with you more frequently and take care of you myself. Then you probably wouldn’t have that… problem.”

Conard knew that his brother was talking about giving a compulsory mental treatment on him. “You were just trying to help.” He rested his head on Nicholas’ chest. “To be honest, I was always living in fear. You took too much burden on your shoulders and I didn’t want to give your more pressure. I tried to be as successful as you but failed. No matter what I do, I can’t catch up with you. It feels like I’m useless. I was afraid that one day you would leave me. It would be the worst nightmare.”  Conard’s voice broke.

It hurts when Nicholas heard Conard’s words. “Conny, you silly boy! Never will I abandon you.” To prove it, Nicholas hold Conard tighter. “But I was very furious when you said I was with CRS. Your trust is all I need. But you didn’t let me have it and ran away from me. I couldn’t help yelling at you. Don’t do that again, promise me.”

“I promise.” Conard whispered with satisfaction and moved his body to find a  more comfortable way to lean on his brother. “I’m sorry to make you worried.”

“Oh, when I was on the roof of that tall building, I really thought I killed you! My mind became blank and the only thing I could think of is suicide.” The picture of the scarlet     blood on Conard’s white suit flashes through Nicholas’ mind. “God, if I had killed you, I…I…” Nicholas’ lips begun to tremble, there were tears in his eyes.

Realizing that his brother is at the edge of collapse, Conard sat up and try to comfort him. “Nick, I’m here. I’m right here. OK? Look at me. You didn’t kill me! I’m right here in your home!”

Nicholas calmed down and signed, “Sometimes you can be really cruel. Stay with me from now on, will you? My precious boy.”

“I’ll consider it as long as I’m the first on your VIP list.”

“Hey! I canceled all my appointment for your unexpected lunch invitation!”

Conard smiled and lay in Nicholas’ arms, he knew he will stay forever.
